Anne Lamott, who writes both fiction and nonfiction, has written an excellent book for writers: Bird By Bird (Double Day, 1994). Easy reading and very down to earth is how I would describe her style. I always feel I can relate to her through her writing or through her characters. I've seen her speak and she is one of the best role models for writers I know of.
